Broadband rollout opens opportunities to AB Equipment

Now that the Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) evolution is well and truly up and running across the country, AB Equipment has been quick to recognise the potential of this project and has positioned itself to take further advantage of the opportunities that lay ahead. “You could say that we’re taken UFB by the throat,” says AB Equipment’s Chief Executive, Peter Dudson. “We’ve already invested heavily in Vermeer and Baroid products, and are about to take the next step by increasing our commitment to specialist recruitment, staff training, stock and parts.”
The UFB programme involves laying thousands of kilometres of fibre optic cable and ducting to bring UFB to more than 830,000 homes and businesses across New Zealand and will continue to be rolled out to three quarters of New Zealand households and businesses until 2019 as part of the government’s $1.5 billion UFB initiative.
The Vermeer Series II underground directional drill models D9x13 and D20x22, when combined with associated mixing tanks and locating systems, have proven to be particularly popular with contractors on this project. Baroid Industrial Drilling Products have also become a vital ingredient in the overall package. AB Equipment stocks a full range of Baroid performance-driven products such as EZ-MUD® drilling fluid additive and BORE-GEL® boring fluid for horizontal directional drilling and construction operations.
Having made the decision to move from Auckland two years ago, long term AB Equipment customer, Coastal Cabling Services Ltd is currently laying cable throughout the Bay of Plenty region. A passionate Vermeer supporter, Coastal Cabling Director Brent Rae claims that the AB Equipment team has stepped up big time. “I have owned seven drills and only one has not been a Vermeer. You only have to look around to see how many Vermeers are out there working on this project. It’s a quality product with a great back up,” he said.
This year alone Coastal Cabling have bought two Vermeer Navigator D20x22 drills, one smaller D9x13 version plus two MX125 mixing tanks. “The AB Equipment Mount Maunganui team hasbeen outstanding with their after sales support,” says Brent Rae. “The parts we need are all being held in stock and that’s what you call backing your product.” Brent believes that after the initial excitement, the UFB project will settle down over time but is confident that with quality Vermeer products and the support from AB Equipment and his own team, Coastal Cabling are definitely in it for the long haul.
Coastal Cabling has been closely associated with AB Equipment since they commenced business in Auckland in 2003. A chance discussion around that time led AB Equipment to sponsor Brent’s other passion, his Coastal Cabling racing car. “This just shows the level of support the AB team offers its customers and that’s why we buy Vermeer,” says Brent.
“AB Equipment is also proud and privileged to have been chosen to provide product support to many other contractors,” says Peter Dudson.
